ZeEUS – Zero Emission Urban Bus System

Bringing electrification to the heart of the urban bus network

ZeEUS represented the UITP activities in the field of public transport electrification at launch event of the Brussels-based Platform for Electro-Mobility on 21 April. The new Platform unites businesses and stakeholders from the road, rail, urban public transport and electricity supply sectors as well as civil society and cities to promote the benefits of sustainable electrification of all transport modes in Europe.

“EU needs to speed up electrification and be leader in clean transport”, said Henrik Hololei, Director-General at the European Commission’s DG MOVE, at the launch of the Platform for Electro-Mobility. He stressed that especially for the urban environment electrification of transport can provide a significant contribution to improving air quality and decreasing CO2 emissions.
Panelists from DG Clima, Council Presidency the Netherlands, Alstom, Renault-Nissan and Transport for Greater Manchester agreed that electro-mobility offers an unequalled solution to make Europe’s transport more efficient, less dependent on imported energy, low carbon, clean and quiet.
Rafael Cuesta, Head of Development and Innovation at UITP member and ZeEUS partner Transport for Greater Manchester presented the combined authority’s positive experience with fully electric buses and outlined the planned expansion of the charging infrastructure. With regards to the upcoming European Commission’s Communication on the Decarbonisation of Transport he emphasized that long-term planning and funding perspectives are key to encouraging cities to further invest in cleaner public transport solutions.
